With DuPont U.S.A., S.Korea accelerates "Exodus-Japan" over [Made In S.Korea] domestic production of Photo-Resist

DuPont, global chemical material manufacturer, will build a factory in South Korea for manufacturing Extreme Ultra Violet (EUV) Photo-Resist, a core semiconductor material. EUV Photo-Resist is one of the three major products that Japan has restricted last year to S.Korea. It is expected that domestic procurement will kick off in early next year.

According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy of S.Korea, DuPont filed an investment report with S.Korea Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) on September 9 to build a EUV Photo-Resist production factory in S.Korea. On August 8, Mr. YUNMO SEON’, the Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy of S.Korea, met directly with the President John Kemp of DuPont of the United States. The investment is worth $ 28 million USD by 2021. The production plant will be built in Cheonan, S.Korea.

EUV Photo-Resist is an important material used in semiconductor microfabrication. It is used in a process of forming a pattern on a semiconductor substrate (wafer). Japanese companies such as JSR, Shin-Etsu, and Tokyo Oka Industries (TOK) account for over 90% of the global market share.

Positive effects are expected for domestic industries in S.Korea.  An expert committee member of the Institute of S.Korea Industry said, "Supply of semiconductor materials has become stable and possible to deal with unexpected situations such as Japan's export restrictions". It will be as well possible to increase the domestic production rate of semiconductor materials with the cost saving advantages, which currently occupies 25~30% in the domestic market share".

DuPont becomes able to enter a new market by taking advantage of the independence movement for S.Korean materials, parts and equipment. President John Kemp mentioned that DuPont plans to cooperate closely with the key demand manufacturers in South Korea, including the process of product demonstrations and examinations".
