Since K-Pop has reached at some point in the past few decades with influence in many parts of the world, I believe that we have arrived at the time to reflect on recently tragic deaths of female celebrities and to talk about why this happened and how to prevent this from happening again in the future.
First of all, since the first female president was elected of all time in the history of South Korea, even though she unfortunately had to step down due to her own colossal mistakes, women’s social status in the nation has been rising up so has feminism been rapidly growing up with young women aged from 20’s to 30’s in the past few years.
In South Korea, there were factually some movements for women’s rights claimed by Korean women initiated decades ago, which might as well arguably be called feminism in broad perspective as some of those feminists insist. However, since the modern feminism is the ideology or notion that has not been generated on its own by Koreans in this nation but has been imported from the western world in merely the past few years, which is such a short amount of time, there has been misunderstandings and misinterpretations about it as well.
For example, in South Korea, there is an extremely radical feminist group on and off line called “WOMAD”(formerly called MEGALIA) with tens of thousands of female only members that they reject male members. They insist that all men are subconscious criminals who could commit crimes all the time, which idea has led them to agitate the “HATRED AGAINST MEN” and women have less crime rates than men as well as possess more empathy than men so that women are superior than men, which they call “WOMAN SUPREMACY”. In the last year, they boasted their mass collective power by having a couple of demonstrations with tens of thousands of crowds, shouting out those hate speeches and chanting supremacist slogans at the center of Seoul city.
Whether people are for it or against it, this radical feminist group has made disturbing controversies in the last few years, which for example, in July 2018, this group’s member uploaded a photo on the group’s website with a male baby mutilated after abortion surgery. She insisted that she was a nurse and disfigured more of the corpse of the baby with the surgery tools because the baby was a man with the mocking comment that “I don’t know how to dispose it. If I throw this shit away outside, dogs will eat it. Hahaha.” Regardless she actually did it on the baby, the following replies from the group’s members on this post were more shockingly disgusting that ridiculed the baby, saying “It looks like bloody squid shit that I want to eat it”, “It will be good for Bibimbap to mix in and eat with” and proceed on with such as those comments.

When this WOMAD website was revealed to the public by the media recently, people were shocked that some women could do this and it has led multiple people to change their conception about positive side of feminism but increased huge negativity about feminism as it serves right along with this case and other indescribably repulsive cases done by this group’s members.
Since this radical feminist group has empowered its number of members, they not only tackle men but also successful women who they think appeal to men with the beauty and sexuality. For attacking those successful women, this radical feminist group takes advantage of sexually conservative S.Korean society with the convenient shield insisting that South Korea is a deeply patriarchal nation along with the support of extreme South Korean feminists in the media, press, universities, governmental organizations, etc.
South Korea somehow is a patriarchal society but things have been rapidly changed with the rise of women’s social status for equality, which for example, as mentioned above, the first female president ever elected, which many western nations still has not had such as the U.S., France, etc. as South Korea has been transformed in such a short time for a few decades with the fast economic success, called the miracle of HAN river. This criticism of Korean patriarchal system originally generated from protection and care for women that men are bread winners, working outside for his wife and family due to many wars and the colonial time in the Korean peninsula and as though in the South Korean constitution, all Korean people must serve the duty for military defense, the fact is that only men must go for compulsory military services for a couple of years except women. But those psychopathically radical feminists even mock Korean men that all Korean men are parrots for military duty or merely MEAT SHIELD in the front line for wars and for protection of superior women.
Those young feminists target other young successful women such as female celebrities as well by cyber-bullying on their news articles, instagrams, facebooks, etc. when they define that those women have used the beauty and sexuality for men under their radar even though those female singers or actresses implore that they have become the same feminists as themselves.

The late Sulli had such a free soul and she revealed that she is proactive for no bras. Actually, most men are not against no bras for beautiful woman like Sulli with such a bright mind but those radical feminists attack her that she is sloppy or attention seeking bitch by appealing her sexuality for men with no bras. For example, if you have a look at the best reply comments with hundreds of likes on a news article above, reply commenters are consisted of almost 70% females and the rest 30% males as well as the most percentage ages are ranged between comparatively young 20’s and 30’s. The majority of commenters are negative about her more than positive, saying that she has no shame, she is a attention seeker, it makes people sick to see her, and so on. After Sulli implored that she had also become a feminist, the fortitude of attack somehow has decreased but it has never stopped.

The late Goo Hara had similar experiences. For example, in early this year, She had the serious medical symptom called “lid ptosis” so she actually had to go through the eyelid surgery for medical reasons as her doctor requested but those people criticized her that she lied about it and had it for plastic purpose.
Whatever the reasons are, reply comments on her news articles have been harsh and cruel, saying that she lies about the reason for surgery, she looks uglier than before, she is a plastic surgery monster, and so on, which you could have a look at the above article as an example that the best comments with thousands likes are of gender consistency with almost 70% females and the rest 30% males as well as ages from 20’s to 40’s take the most percentages.
Of course, Goo Hara’s death is definitely related as well to her ex-boyfriend who threatened her with their sex tape but another key reason for her depression that I want to point out is for many years of those sorts of malicious comments about her that have been also a big part to trigger as much as she had such a pure, sensitive soul.

The beginning of criticism on Sulli and Goo Hara flashes back to the year of 2016. They both had the opportunity to take commercial photos for American multinational corporation Johnson & Johnson. The photographer Lota took a photo for commercial promotion and released it but it brought huge criticisms that the shirt, which they wore, said “BABY OIL” on it and those people insisted that the photo objectifies female sexuality to intrigue pedophilia (N.B.: the two women were over 20’s at the time, by the way), which it does not fit with baby’s commodity so then protested it and even received an apology from the company for it. At first, they criticized the photographer but later on, also blamed the two female celebrities, saying that they have no conception for responsibilities, they are such attention seekers and also greatly punishable for it as much as the photographer, and so on.
If you look at the above, over 90% reply commenters on the news article are women and age class is that 77% of them are young 20’s, criticizing not only the photographer but also the two women.
In conclusion, South Korea is somehow conservative (also means sexually conservative according to Confucianism) and patriarchal society as well as recently increasing of equality for both men and women but nowadays, some of those young generations of extremely radical feminists, for example such as WOMAD, use this sexual conservatism with their increased power, which has been fortified by the rise of women’s social status for the past few years, for attacking not only men but also successful young women such as female celebrities as easy targets that might ultimately lead them to suicides. In my personal opinion, for one of those reasons, some of those desperate wannabes, who realized that they might not be as much successful as those female celebrities, end up bullying those good women out of distorted jealousy and anger by using the good excuse of feminism. Those radical feminists must stop this rampage at this point after the tragic deaths of 2 innocent female celebrities and put it on leverage or the same incidents will keep happening on beautiful young celebrities in South Korea.
